CLUTTER CAN BE PURGED BUT WHEN ORGANIZING AFTER THE PURGE BOX-IT, BASKET-IT & STORAGE-IT. WHEN STORAGE IS AT A SHORTAGE CREATIVE CONTAINERS CAN ADD TO YOUR DECOR AND KEEP YOU ORGANIZED.
Hey there,
Rumor has it that in the New Year we must make new resolutions and we need to promise to improve in all areas of our lives. But the truth is that the best way to accomplish something big or small is by taking action. Let’s be truthful here, we can set intentions and visualize all we want but without action- nothing happens.
Taking action doesn’t mean it has to be doing difficult things or making drastic decisions nor does it have to be an arduous task… but if you want to start somewhere and need simple actionable steps here is One Thing you could decide to do before the first quarter is over “I will complete these:…(list)” that will bring you a lot of rewards and may encourage you to go on… TAKING ACTION!
HOW TO CREATE STYLISH STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR HOME
Keep it simple and sustainable. If you make it so easy that it’s almost laughable you will get it done and perhaps get more done. This will spark momentum and your “Action taking” muscle will get stronger.
Now that Spring is approaching, purging and organizing is usually a good way to start taking small steps. Begin with some action that doesn’t take a lot of effort but it provides a good place to begin. To sweeten the deal it can also be stylish and add to your décor.
USING BOXES FOR STYLISH STORAGE
In my opinion, storage has to be beautiful if it is going to be part of your visible space. I mean, how could you possibly store books, or blankets in a cardboard box from the Super? …
Well, at least wrap it up with cool craft paper and maybe add a DIY leather handle. Or choose a wrapping paper that you LOVE and that goes with your décor and Voila! You just created stylish storage for a couple of dollars.
SKINNY SHELVES FOR SPACE SAVING STORAGE
Kids bedrooms, there is a place where creativity and thinking outside the box will keep you somewhat sane. Depending on the age group I love skinny shelves to store books with the front cover –front facing. These shelves will encourage (with your help) the younger munchkins to set the books on the shelf without the use of bookends, and it makes it easy to find the right book at the right time. Hang these shelves at the height your child/children can reach.
USE BASKETS FOR STORAGE TO MATCH ANY STYLE
Baskets, oh! Do I love baskets? If you have the floor space and not the closet space, how about towels rolled up and stood inside a basket? This makes a functional decorative piece, it provides texture and color and easy access. In a bathroom a basket with a lid for the TP is genius. One of those IKEA rods with hanging vessels works great to hang by your vanity and sort your creams, from your make-up and hair products.
HANGING STORAGE IS STYLISH AND SIMPLE
Another clever trick is to add the traditional shoe hanging storage- (one that typically goes behind a door- only when you add the shoes then your door never fully opens) YES! That one, but use it instead in a craft closet. Store your yarn, buttons or markers and cute shapes for scrapbooking. Makeup labels so you always know what goes where. How about one of these in the pantry? Place snacks in each compartment if you have to get lunches ready or you want to share the snacks fairly among a rowdy bunch.
MINI STORAGE HACK
A small extension rod under the kitchen sink or bathroom sink is a clever spot for storing cleaning spray bottles. With a couple of S, hooks hang rags to wipe clean counters. You can even add a roll of paper towels and a spray bottle of glass cleaner to make it super easy to clean that mirror.
SUITCASES & OTTOMANS MAKE UNIQUE AND STYLISH STORAGE SOLUTIONS
In small spaces and depending on your décor style, suitcases stack together to make a great storage space for extra blankets, towels or those items you don’t need too often. Or, perhaps your crafts or sewing supplies if you don’t have a closet.
Ottomans with storage are great too. Baskets under the coffee table are stylish and provide a place for remotes, magazines or games. A short cubby from IKEA, add wheels and set all the homework supplies in there. Roll it up to the table when the kids are doing homework, then store it away when done; it makes it easy, organized and functional.
ORGANIZING IS THE KEY TO STYLISH STORAGE SOLUTIONS
The truth is storage is everywhere but don’t just it to store, it is a good way to start the year purging unwanted items, clothes, and stuff you have taking up space not only physical but also emotional believe it or not. If you have not used it in at least six months; donate it, have a garage sale… give it away… letting go and starting off with a clean slate has a very cleansing feeling. It can literally make you feel lighter, less bogged down. It creates a sense of order and that there is a sense of a place for everything.
These are just some of the easiest ideas and most common areas that need organizing and purging, there is a lot more and honestly, I could write a whole book about it and still not cover all the areas, ideas or options.
Don’t be overwhelmed, start small, tackle one area at the time and whatever you do if nothing else….Don’t go out and buy a bunch of plastic units, shelves, boxes, and baskets, organizing items etc… this process although tempting and exciting at first will deplete your energy and your pocket and you don’t yet know what you need.
PURGE first, then see what you have, assess what you may need and ask yourself what do I already have that I can use in perhaps a different way to store MUST KEEP items? Then, beautify, enhance and organize.
